A Packaging revolution for developing markets
Growth in emerging markets will create billions of aspiring new consumers.
A key challenge for business is to serve these aspirations, whilst remaining affordable to an emerging consumer and minimising their environmental impact.
Affordability constraints force many consumers to buy small pack sizes of products – yet for a small (90ml) bottle of shampoo, the plastic bottle costs 1.5 times more than the shampoo itself.
Innovative packaging design developing as part of a government sponsored project allows consumers to re-use their bottle, slashing the environmental impact and increasing the affordability of aspirational products to an emerging consumer.

Whilst the majority of African goods arrive by boat, there are understandable environmental concerns for those goods that are air-freighted. It’s important to place this environmental impact in context however, as the average Kenyan has a tiny carbon footprint compared to a UK consumer and air-freighted goods provide a livelihood to impoverished Kenyans.
