Meet Sequoia
Steve Wall - Manufacturing Practice Leader, co-founder of Sequoia
Steve has over 15 years experience in manufacturing strategy and supply chain design - working on assignments with Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, Coca-Cola, Nestle, Reckitt Benckiser, Sainsbury, Argos and others.

He read Electronic Engineering at Southampton and then joined Unilever for 10 years as a Systems Engineer. Moving to Coopers & Lybrand in 1986, he built an FMCG group focused on Supply Chain Strategy and Re-engineering, before founding Sequoia in 1992.

Steve's assignment track record includes: an agronomy through packaging strategy for the South American arm of a major multinational; project managing an eCommerce start up; project director of a £200 million paper industry investment - as well as advising two brand leading beverage businesses and a detergents business on Supply Chain investments and optimisation.
"As a business owner and single parent of two girls - life is pretty demanding, but fulfilling. Not being a great fan of exercise, outside of work I'm a keen motorsport fan. But, being basically an ageing hippy - whenever I get the chance I'm playing one of my guitars."
 
James Warner - Logistics Practice Leader
James has over 20 years experience in supply chain strategy and performance improvement – working with major multinationals in manufacturing, retailing, public sector and financial services businesses.

Having read Engineering at Cambridge, James joined Mars group and held various senior operational roles for 10 years. He then moved to Coopers and Lybrand where he focused on supply chain strategy and performance improvement - becoming lead partner of PwC’s global supply chain practice, before joining Sequoia in 2002.

His many assignments span Supply Chain Strategy and Integration as well as Purchasing and Supply Management. Whilst James has focused on the FMCG sectors, he also has diverse experience covering healthcare, chemicals, electrical goods and banking.
"I live with my wife and daughter on the edge of Dartmoor. My pastimes include walking on Dartmoor, playing the clarinet, supporting various community activities, sailing, cycling and running marathons!"
 
Sarah Sheppard - Training Practice Leader, co-founder of Sequoia and HR director

Sarah studied Manufacturing Engineering at Brunel University and then joined Coopers & Lybrand as a Graduate Trainee.

As a co-founder of Sequoia in 1992, she has been involved in many of the developments in our consulting approach.

Her key focus area has been the development of the Manufacturing Strategy and Supply Chain cost models that are a key part of our consulting process. Responsible for the implementation of the models, and the transfer of techniques required for them to operate effectively, she has worked for a variety of clients in the manufacturing, wholesale and retailing sectors.
"Outside of work I am married and a full-time mum to two girls – need I say more?! I also enjoy sailing, cycling and running … whenever I get the chance!"
 
Erika Biggadike – Managing Consultant and Internal Admin Director

Erika read Aero-Mechanical Systems Engineering at Cranfield University and then joined Sequoia in 1995 as a Graduate Trainee.

She has worked on Supply Chain Design projects for clients such as Unilever, Nestle and Danone. Her practical experience of working on optimisation projects, and the time she spent working as a planner at a client who was implementing Cycle-Based-Scheduling, have proved invaluable and given credibility to the training courses that she has managed and run across Europe.

She has created numerous cost models of factories and run the financial evaluation for manufacturing strategies for the UK, European and South-America operations of major multi-nationals.

Sally Philp – Managing Consultant

Sally has worked in the area of Supply Chain Optimisation for more than 10 years for clients such as Coca-Cola, Argos, Trebor Bassett, Spillers, Manor Bakeries and Dairy Crest.

After Graduating in Engineering from Cambridge University and gaining post graduate qualifications from Cambridge and Cranfield, Sally joined Steve’s FMCG group at Coopers and Lybrand in 1988, moving to Sequoia in 1993.

Her assignments have largely involved cost modelling for optimisation used in value analysis, stock/scheduling trade off, activity based costing and distribution strategy amongst others.
"Out of the office I manage a house full of sports fanatics with 2 budding tennis players for children. When I’m not helping at the tennis club or cheering from the sidelines I’m keeping my own fitness levels up for the squash court"
 
David Bosomworth – Managing Consultant, R&D and NPO Director

Dave joined the Sequoia team in 1998 after graduating from Nottingham with a Masters in Manufacturing Engineering & Management.

He has been involved with assignments analysing areas of supply chain performance such as forecast accuracy and stock level optimisation as well as being part of the implementation of Cycle-Based-Scheduling for a large soft drinks manufacturer and a large soup and sauce manufacturer.

Most recently, Dave led a distribution strategy review to minimise stock, distribution and warehousing costs for a direct sales Cosmetics company, identifying the optimal number and location of RDCs across Europe and the CIS.

Dave's external interest in environmental economics is helping to drive forward Sequoia’s work in costing environmental effects into our network strategy work.
"A fan of exercise, 'the outdoors' and travel, I spend my spare time on my mountain bike (trying not to fall off), musing over future travel destinations and struggling to keep up to speed with a distance learning course in Applied Environmental Economics."
 
Sam Shuttleworth – Managing Consultant

Sam joined Sequoia in 2010 and brings 10 years of strategic marketing and business planning experience to the team. Prior to joining she worked at Defra on water quality sustainability issues.

She brings a different perspective to Sequoia having a diverse consultancy background in retail, automotive, tourism and transport - both private and public sector - in markets across Europe, US, Japan and Australia (her native land). At Sequoia she provides a bridge between our clients’ Supply Chain and Sales and Marketing departments.

She has a BA with Honours in Geography and Environmental Science from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia and is an Associate of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

"Outside the office I like most sports (including rugby, golf, F1, tennis), shopping, walking my two retrievers...actually, there’s quite a lot I like. "
 
Helen Ritchie – Managing Consultant and Finance Director

Helen joined Sequoia in 2001 as a Graduate Trainee after studying Mechanical Engineering at The University of Birmingham.

Her work has mainly focused on the development of computer models to represent and optimise the loading of factories and production lines with products for clients such as Unilever, Nestle and St Regis Paper.

Having been involved with the re-design and development of an online eMarket, she is now responsible for bringing internet technologies to core Sequoia work.
"When not at work my life is run by Reading Hockey Club where, injury permitting, I can usually be found playing hockey. There are also occasions when I have been seen diving in the Red Sea or off the coast of Australia."
 
Philippa Mendoza – Consultant and Sales & Marketing Director

Philippa joined the Sequoia team in 2006 after graduating from the University of Hertfordshire with a BSc in Maths and Computing. Before her recent studies, she spent 11 years working as an account planner in advertising agencies, developing marketing and advertising strategies for a wide range of clients. She also has a BA in Philosophy and German from Oxford University.

Since her arrival at Sequoia, she has been involved in a manufacturing strategy cost modelling assignment, and has taken responsibility for Sales and Marketing within the partnership.
"Being a single mum to two kids keeps me pretty busy outside work, but when I get some time to myself I enjoy the theatre, cinema and music – and chocolate! I’m also researching my family history, which will take me all over Britain and Eastern Europe this year."
 
Claire Johnson – Trainee Consultant and IT Director

Claire joined The Sequoia Partnership in 2008 after completing an MSci in Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. As part of her degree she also studied at the University of Melbourne during 2006/07.

"I like to unwind by socialising with friends and improving my movie knowledge. I am also looking forward to seeing the world piece by piece, after spending a year in Australia I am keen to continue seeing new sights and cities."
 
Nick Grudgings – Trainee Consultant

Nick read Manufacturing Engineering at University of Bath. His thesis on the environmental implications of a distributed manufacturing system cemented his interest in the subject area and he subsequently joined The Sequoia Partnership as a Graduate Trainee in 2008.

"I'm a big fan of snowsports, but given the lack of snow in London I spend most of my time cycling, running and trying to visit some of the city's museums and art galleries."
 
Sam Shortt – Trainee Consultant

Sam joined The Sequoia Partnership in 2008 as a trainee after completing a Management Science degree at the University of Southampton.

Before joining Sequoia she completed an industrial placement where she worked as part of the Dealer Business team at DAF Truck Limited, providing a support for regional managers and franchisees'.

"When I am away from work I spend most of my time doing equestrian sports such as eventing. Therefore, if you can't find me at my desk try looking on a local hilltop!"
 
Jon Openshaw - Office Manager

Jon is a graduate in English Literature from Sheffield University and joined Sequoia in 2008 after working in recruitment and as a secondary school teacher.

In addition to keeping the office running smoothly, Jon is involved with providing vocal training to develop the consultants' presentation skills.

"Outside of Sequoia, I work as a private tutor, and also as a classical singer. I hope one day to sing professionally as an operatic baritone."
