Cycle-Based-Scheduling (CBS)
The simple approach to scheduling product families, sequences or long changeovers.


CBS requires more safety stock than a ROP approach. This is because you may have some products on a cycle of more than 1 week and your safety stock levels will need to account for the variability in demand over this extended period.

However, you do end up fixing production of SKUs to particular weeks and particular days of the week, there by significantly reducing the variability of utilisation whilst helping to improve supplier (ingredients and materials) variability.
To make CBS work effectively, you should periodically (every couple of years) look at optimising the cycle lengths you are operating to on a SKU by SKU basis. ...more
